Introducing the AI Claim Comparer: Smarter Patent Analysis Across Your Entire Portfolio

Understanding how patent protection deviates across a patent family is one of the most critical—and time-consuming—tasks in IP work. Whether you’re tracking claim changes from application to grant, assessing freedom to operate, or monitoring a competitor’s portfolio, it typically means hours of manual side-by-side comparison. Until now.

We’re excited to introduce the AI Claim Comparer, a new IamIP feature built to bring precision, speed, and clarity to patent claim analysis.

Why We Built It

Patent claims are the legal backbone of any patent. Even small changes in wording can have significant implications for the scope of protection. Yet comparing claims across publications—across filings, jurisdictions, and languages—has always required deep manual effort. Our users told us this was one of their biggest pain points, and we developed the AI Claim Comparer directly in response.

“We aimed to simplify one of the most challenging aspects of patent work: claims analysis. This allows users to concentrate on the most significant changes in the claims, as opposed to sifting through the entirety of the document.” – Bartosz Lesner, Product Owner @ IamIP

What It Does

The AI Claim Comparer enables precise, one-to-one comparisons of patent claims between two patent publications. It is designed for patent professionals and IP teams who need a high level of accuracy, but is equally accessible for R&D teams who need to quickly understand the competitive landscape.

The feature has the following core functionalities:

1. Word-by-Word Comparison: This mode analyses claim text word by word, marking even the smallest changes between two publications. In patent work, every word carries legal weight—a single added or removed term can materially affect the scope of protection. This mode ensures nothing goes unnoticed.

2. AI Reorder Function: This is where the AI Claim Comparer goes beyond conventional comparison tools. Rather than assuming claims with a similar scope appear in the same order across two publications, the AI analyses claims from both the source and target publications and automatically matches claims that are semantically similar, even if their structure or numbering has changed.

This is particularly powerful for identifying situations where several claims have been merged into one, or where a single claim has been divided into several. Spotting these changes manually is notoriously difficult and time-consuming; the AI Reorder makes it immediate. Once claims are matched, a word-by-word comparison is also applied on top, so you see both the structural realignment and the precise textual changes in one view.

3. One-to-One Claim Comparison: For more targeted analysis, the AI Claim Comparer also allows you to select and compare individual claims directly— useful when you need to focus on a specific claim rather than the full claim set.

“The solution provides a clear visualization of the actual differences between claims, saving users valuable time. Even the smallest alterations are meticulously displayed.” – Bartosz Lesner, Product Owner @ IamIP

Breaking the Language Barrier

Patent families often span multiple jurisdictions, with claims written in different languages. The AI Claim Comparer works across languages using a unified framework in the background, allowing you to compare claims from patents in different jurisdictions without needing to translate them manually first. This opens up cross-jurisdictional analysis in a way that was previously impractical for most teams.

Where It Makes the Biggest Difference

The AI Claim Comparer is especially valuable in scenarios where understanding claim evolution is business-critical:

  • Application to grant: Has the scope of protection changed during prosecution? Are claims you were tracking still relevant?
  • Freedom to operate: Before a product launch, quickly assess whether a competitor’s granted claims present a risk, even if the original application did not.
  • Competitor and technology watch: Re-evaluate the criticality of patents in your watch list as they move from application to grant.
  • Cross-jurisdiction portfolio analysis: Understand whether your protection—or a competitor’s—is stronger in one jurisdiction than another.

“Security was a priority from day one. User data is not stored in our system. We operate on a stateless model, processing only requests sent to the AI service without retaining any personal information. All connections are securely encrypted, and backend services are not accessible to the public.” – Bartosz Lesner, Product Owner @ IamIP

The Bigger Picture

The most valuable thing an IP professional or R&D team can do is interpret findings and make informed decisions. The AI Claim Comparer takes care of finding the differences, so your expertise can go where it matters most.

The result: faster analysis, fewer oversights, and more confident decision-making across your patent workflows.
